Dr. Tracy Weissgerber from Charité - University Medicine Berlin is joining us for the upcoming Mannheim Open Science Data Meetup.

Abstract:
The FAIR principles indirectly outline the responsibilities of the data depositor by identifying dataset properties that facilitate reuse. However, the data provenance and the quality of the methods used to generate and validate data are often overlooked. We cannot reuse data responsibly if we don’t know how they were generated. FAIR data evaluations typically focus on the question “Can I reuse these data?”. We argue that it’s time to add an additional focus, by asking “Should I re-use these data?”; and “How should I re-use these data responsibly?”. This talk will explore the rationale for our recent call to develop guiding principles for responsible data reuse (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-024-02879-x), while briefly highlighting the PRO-MaP guidelines (Promoting Reusable and Open Methods And Protocols,https://osf.io/preprints/osf/x85gh), which aim to improve methods reporting in the life sciences. PRO-MaP outlines actions that four different stakeholder groups can take to improve the reporting of methods and reusable step-by-step protocols: researchers, research institutions and departments, publishers and editors and funders.
